CAR BUILDER AND MAGICIAN

Meeting Chris is really what made our dream possible. He invited us to visit his garage in Oakland, CA. He asked us not to share the address with anyone. He thought we were a couple of snow bros with some crypto gains and not much more, but the friend who helped us get the invitation was trustworthy enough for him to give us a chance.

We arrived on a mid-day afternoon and found Chris working on a couple of different cars for clients. Everything was pre-1920. It was a small space that was obsessively organized. Every shelf was filled with parts and tools, and every shelf was neatly marked with a handwritten label.

Our plan was to spend a half-hour in the garage, not wanting to hinder the work that needed to be finished. We ended up spending an hour and a half. Chris took us for a ride in one of his personal cars, a Model T that he was building to race. That sealed the deal. We had to have one of our own.

Chris agreed to build one—one that would be a 1911 and match the Model T in the photographs of the Grass Valley Four that we had showed him. Ten days later, he delivered.
